Lawrence Burkett has 11 years of experience in the seismic design, evaluation, and retrofitting of steel and concrete structures, with expertise in performance-based and advanced methods. His recent projects have included the seismic retrofit of historic buildings and the peer review of retrofit projects and new designs. Lawrence led the seismic evaluation of the Health Sciences complex at the UCSF Parnassus campus, using state-of-the-art probabilistic techniques to offer optimized retrofit solutions that reduce potential earthquake disruption to the facility.
Lawrence has applied his expertise to the design and peer review of new tall buildings on the west coast, including the lead role in the 45% design of the new control tower at San Francisco International Airport. He has authored a number of technical publications, and he was the co-winner of the 2010 PEER/NEES Concrete Column Blind Prediction Contest, for the most accurate structural analysis predicting the failure characteristics of a full-scale concrete structure tested on the UCSD shake table.
