Lawrence has 18 years of experience in seismic design, evaluation, and retrofitting of steel and concrete structures, with expertise in performance-based and advanced methods. Lawrence led the seismic evaluation of the Health Sciences complex at the UCSF Parnassus campus, using state-of-the-art probabilistic techniques to offer optimized retrofit solutions that reduce potential earthquake disruption to the facility. Lawrence has applied his expertise to the design and peer review of new tall buildings on the west coast, including the lead role in the 45% design of the new control tower at San Francisco International Airport. He was the co-winner of the 2010 PEER/NEES Concrete Column Blind Prediction Contest, for the most accurate structural analysis predicting the failure characteristics of a full-scale concrete structure tested on the UCSD shake table and the 2021 PEER Thick Foundation Blind Prediction contest, for the most accurate prediction of the static capacity of a thick reinforced concrete mat foundation. He was an organizer of the 2021 PEER Reinforced Concrete Column Blind Prediction.
