With 18 years of experience in seismic design, evaluation, and retrofitting of steel and concrete structures, Lawrence brings deep expertise in performance-based and other advanced methods. He led the seismic evaluation of the Health Sciences complex at the UCSF Parnassus campus, applying state-of-the-art probabilistic techniques to develop optimized retrofit solutions that reduce potential earthquake disruption. Additionally, his work on the West Coast includes the design and peer review of new tall buildings, highlighted by his lead role in the 45% design of the new control tower at San Francisco International Airport. Lawrence was the co-winner of the 2010 PEER/NEES Concrete Column Blind Prediction Contest, for the most accurate structural analysis predicting the failure characteristics of a full-scale concrete structure tested on the UCSD shake table and the 2021 PEER Thick Foundation Blind Prediction contest, for the most accurate prediction of the static capacity of a thick reinforced concrete mat foundation. In 2021, he also organized the PEER Reinforced Concrete Column Blind Prediction Contest.
