Residential Units 1, 2, and 3University of California, Berkeley

Maffei Structural Engineering provided peer review services for the seismic evaluation and retrofit of twelve residential buildings composing three student housing complexes at the University of California, Berkeley. Each building is 9-stories tall, with original reinforced concrete construction completed in the 1960s. The project included close collaboration with the University’s Department of Capital Projects and the design team to facilitate a hyper-fast-track design and construction process, which allowed the team to complete the major retrofit of all twelve buildings during the summer vacancy period. We reviewed:

  • Nonlinear response-history analyses of the as-is and retrofitted structures
  • Expected seismic performance and risk
  • Details of the retrofit design for effectiveness, safety, and constructability
