Joe Maffei led the advanced probabilistic seismic evaluation of this complex comprising two 16-story laboratory buildings. The structures, built in 1963, are critical to UCSF’s research mission; more than $50 million in research is conducted annually within the buildings. After assessing the structure, building systems, and laboratory contents, the team provided a menu of retrofit measures that allow UCSF to respond to different scenarios of construction funding and functional constraints. Maffei Structural Engineering is currently collaborating with Estructure on the implementation of the highest priority retrofit measures, along with the remodel of 40,000 square feet of laboratory space.
