War Memorial Veterans BuildingSan Francisco, California

Opened in 1932, the War Memorial Veteran’s Building houses the 900-seat Herbst Theatre and the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery. Maffei Structural Engineering provided peer review services for the seismic upgrade of the historic structure, which includes new concrete shear walls that are designed to rock on their foundations. The peer review examined the nonlinear analysis of the building and recommended improvements to refine construction details to achieve the intended rocking mechanism of response.
